Europe's Representations of India: Texts, Images, and Encounters

Creating a pan-European network of researchers with the shared goal of mapping and analyzing the crystallization of modern European representations of India

About the Action

Connecting Europe and India through research on cultural encounters

ESIND is a multidisciplinary network of researchers from all parts of Europe and surrounding countries, which aims at mapping and analysing the development of European representations of India and their impact on past and present encounters between Europeans and Indians.

The network focuses on underexamined regions and sources from the early modern era until today and will translate a body of excerpts selected from European texts about India from more than 25 languages into English.

Inside ESIND

Meet our People

The COST Action ESIND is organized into interconnected groups, each playing a key role in research, collaboration, and dissemination. Together, they contribute to advancing knowledge and fostering meaningful discussions.

Core Group

The Core Group provides strategic direction and oversees the implementation of ESIND’s objectives. It ensures coherence between research activities, facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration, and supports decision-making to drive the project forward.

Management Committee

The Management Committee is responsible for coordinating administrative and operational aspects of ESIND. It ensures efficient resource allocation, monitors progress, and fosters international collaboration to achieve the project’s goals effectively.

Working Groups

ESIND is structured into five Working Groups. The first two groups focus on key research themes, whereas the third Working Group supports the creation of translations and their publication on an open-access digital platform. The last two groups aim at reaching wider sections of the academic world (WG4) and people from non-academic sectors, such as diplomacy, business, and general education (WG5).
