Indi@logs: Spanish Journal of India Studies has launched a call for contributions to a special issue closely related to ESIND’s thematic scope and objectives. Please find it below and via this link: https://revistes.uab.cat/indialogs/announcement/view/18

Recent scholarly initiatives —such as the COST Action CA23144: Europe’s Representations of India: Texts, Images, and Encounters (ESIND)— have highlighted the importance of examining how these representations have been developed across diverse European contexts in order to understand the ways in which Indo-European engagements continue to influence present-day political, cultural and academic frameworks. By foregrounding multilingual archives and underexplored sources from India and Europe, this line of inquiry seeks to reassess long-standing European imaginaries of India and to explore the intellectual, aesthetic and social processes through which Europe has engaged with the subcontinent.

This special issue invites contributions that critically engage with European representations of India across historical periods and media forms, paying particular attention to the role of cross-cultural mediations and lived encounters in shaping these representations.

Submissions may address the following topics in line with the theme of this special issue of Indi@logs, “Representing India in Europe: Intercultural Mediations and Encounters” (but are not limited to):

  • Representations of Indian peoples, religions and social practices in European texts;
  • Visual representations of India in European art, photography, architecture or media;
  • India in European literary, philosophical or political thought;
  • Translation, circulation and reception of Indian texts in Europe;
  • Missionary, diplomatic or commercial narratives of India;
  • Indo-European intellectual and cultural exchanges in other parts of the globe;
  • Representations produced by Europeans living in India;
  • Alternative or dissenting European perspectives on India;
  • Representations of Indian minorities or diasporic communities;
  • Postcolonial reconfigurations of European imaginaries of India;
  • Multilingual archives and knowledge production about India;
  • Contemporary European media representations of India;
  • First impression by Europeans on India.

This special issue guest editors are: Cristóbal Alvear-Garijo, University of Sevilla; Jaro Demetter, Research Centre Vergelijkende Cultuurwetenschap, Ghent University; Anna Vrkoslavová, Technical University of Liberec.

Deadline for submissions: October 31, 2026

Submitted manuscripts should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words and must conform to the Indi@logs author guidelines, available at: https://revistes.uab.cat/indialogs/about/submissions
